Modric dismisses Real Madrid return speculation

Luka Modric has firmly rejected suggestions that he could reunite with Jose Mourinho at Real Madrid, insisting no contact has taken place between the pair as his AC Milan contract enters its final days.

The 40-year-old Croatian midfielder is set to become a free agent when his one-year deal at San Siro expires, having joined the Serie A club last summer with an option for a further 12 months that now appears unlikely to be exercised. Despite widespread speculation that Mourinho’s recent appointment at the Bernabeu might trigger Modric’s return to the Spanish capital in either a playing, coaching or directorial capacity, the veteran has denied talk of imminent negotiations.

World Cup history and Portugal test

Modric continues to defy his age on the international stage, having made history on Saturday by becoming the oldest player to register an assist at the World Cup. The former Ballon d’Or winner set up Torino forward Nikola Vlasic’s decisive strike in Croatia’s 2-1 victory over Ghana, securing their progression to the round of 32 as Group L runners-up.

Croatia now face Portugal in the knockout phase on Friday evening, with Modric’s side set to encounter a squad featuring AC Milan winger Rafael Leão and Juventus attacker Francisco Conceicao.

Retirement considerations

Following the victory over Ghana, Modric acknowledged that his professional career is approaching its conclusion. “I know I’m at an age where the end of my career is getting closer and closer,” he admitted, speaking via TMW.

Regarding Mourinho’s return to Real Madrid, Modric offered warm words while confirming the absence of dialogue. “He hasn’t called me. I wish him the best, he’s a special coach, one of the best. I have a lot of affection for him,” he stated.

While several clubs across the world have reportedly expressed interest in securing his services, Modric is understood to be weighing retirement after the 2026 World Cup. Any return to Real Madrid would likely involve a non-playing role, though Modric’s comments indicate no concrete discussions regarding such a move have occurred.
