Luka Modric is poised to extend his stay at Milan into a second season, with reports indicating the Croatian midfielder is increasingly likely to sign a new one-year contract.

The 40-year-old, who turns 41 in September, saw his previous deal with the Rossoneri expire on June 30. Following Croatia‘s early exit from the 2026 World Cup, Modric has been weighing up his future during an extended break, but discussions with club directors and new head coach Ruben Amorim appear to have swayed his decision towards remaining in Serie A.

Amorim’s Influence

According to Sky Sport Italia, the intensive efforts of Milan’s hierarchy and Amorim himself proved decisive in convincing the Ballon d’Or winner to continue at San Siro. Modric, who grew up supporting Milan during Zvonimir Boban’s playing days, has previously spoken of his childhood dream to wear the red and black shirt.

Should the agreement be finalised, Modric will link up with the squad for their Australian pre-season tour that starts on July 26. The veteran is currently on holiday following international duty, with formal confirmation of the deal expected before the team departs.

2025-26 Campaign Review

Despite his advancing years, Modric remained a key figure for Milan last term, featuring in 37 matches across all competitions. He contributed two goals and three assists, amassing 2,864 minutes of playing time.

His season was briefly interrupted in April when a fractured cheekbone sidelined him for two fixtures, though he recovered to finish the campaign strongly. The injury was one of few setbacks in an otherwise durable season for the midfield maestro.

The potential renewal would see Modric continue playing at the highest level into his 41st year, adding to a decorated career that includes multiple Champions League triumphs with Real Madrid and the 2018 Ballon d’Or. His experience is expected to prove valuable as Amorim implements his methods at the club during the upcoming campaign.
