Olympique Lyonnais have entered into negotiations with Glasgow Rangers regarding the potential transfer of forward Youssef Chermiti, according to Foot Mercato. The French club are expected to submit an offer in the region of €20 million for the Portugal Under-21 international.

Chermiti, 22, has emerged as a primary target for Lyon as they look to rebuild their attacking line. The striker joined Rangers from Everton last summer in a deal worth €8 million and promptly established himself as a key figure at Ibrox. Across 41 appearances in all competitions during his debut campaign, he contributed 15 goals and five assists.

Lyon’s striking shortage

The Ligue 1 outfit are operating with diminished options in the final third. Endrick’s loan arrangement from Real Madrid has concluded, removing one attacking option. Meanwhile, Rachid Ghezzal departed after his contract expired, and Roman Yaremchuk’s temporary stay has not been made permanent.

This collective exodus has created an urgent requirement for reinforcements. Lyon’s recruitment team have identified Chermiti as a suitable candidate to address the shortfall, believing his physical presence and finishing ability align with their tactical requirements.

Deal structure and next steps

Discussions between the clubs have already commenced, though a formal agreement remains some distance away. The mooted €20 million valuation, which includes performance-related bonuses, would generate a substantial return for Rangers on their initial outlay.

Chermiti’s performances in the Scottish Premiership have elevated his reputation across European football. His goal contribution rate—averaging a direct involvement every two matches—has demonstrated his capacity to operate as a central focal point in a high-intensity league.

Lyon will hope to advance negotiations rapidly as pre-season preparations intensify. Rangers, meanwhile, face a decision on whether to retain their leading marksman or sanction a profitable exit just one year after his arrival from Merseyside.
