Lyon sporting director Matthieu Louis-Jean has indicated that Malick Fofana could yet remain at the club despite attracting interest from AS Roma. Speaking to Canal+ during the Europa League draw, Louis-Jean admitted that several clubs are monitoring the Belgian forward, but insisted the French club will not be forced into a sale against their wishes.
“It is possible he will stay,” Louis-Jean said. “Several clubs are showing interest in Malick, but we have a plan and we are going to stick to it – we know what we have to do.”
Financial pressures mount
The comments come as Lyon face a race against time to stabilise their finances. The club must raise approximately €50 million through player sales after failing to qualify for the Champions League. They have until 1 September to adjust their situation.
Louis-Jean acknowledged the difficulty of their position but remained defiant about their strategy. “We are not going to change course. We have four days to adjust our situation; we need to sell. It is not a question of price; it is a question of options for us, and we have to do what is best for us,” he explained.
Fofana’s importance to Lyon
Fofana, who joined the Ligue 1 side two and a half years ago, is considered Lyon’s most valuable player. The 21-year-old established himself as a regular starter on the left wing before disaster struck last October.
A serious ankle injury sustained in the autumn sidelined him for much of the 2025-26 campaign. However, he has since recovered and begun the 2026-27 season strongly, reminding observers of his quality.
His status as the club’s primary asset makes him an obvious target for teams seeking to exploit Lyon’s need for funds. Roma have emerged as the most prominent suitor, though they are not alone in their admiration for the player.
Decision deadline looms
With the transfer window closing imminently, Roma and any other interested parties have limited time to convince Lyon to part with their star winger. The Italian club must present an offer that aligns with Lyon’s specific requirements rather than simply meeting a valuation.
Louis-Jean’s comments suggest that while a transfer remains possible, Lyon are prepared to retain Fofana if they cannot secure a deal that suits their strategic needs. The coming days will determine whether the Belgian continues his career in France or moves to Serie A.
