Malik Tillman’s precise free-kick guided the United States into the World Cup last 16 on Wednesday, capping a night when the midfielder played through the pain of a blood-stained sock and a shattered boot.

The Bayer Leverkusen attacker sealed a 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina in the last-32 tie, curling his set-piece over the wall and back down under the crossbar. The strike made him just the second player in USMNT history to score from a direct free-kick at a World Cup, following Eric Wynalda’s effort in 1994.

The broken boot

Tillman’s decisive moment came after he had suffered a stomp from an opponent that ripped the top of his right boot. During a hydration break, equipment manager Kyle Robertson sprinted to retrieve a replacement, but Tillman chose to change only the damaged right boot, continuing with a bloodied sock on that foot.

Fifteen minutes later, with the US reduced to ten men following Folarin Balogun’s red card, Tillman stepped up from just beyond the penalty area. His strike looped over Stjepan Radeljić, the tallest member of the Bosnian wall, to effectively settle the match.

“We’d been going through all the ways we could possibly take this free kick,” Tillman said afterwards. “We talked about going under the wall, we talked about going keeper-side, we talked about going over the wall. Now I know some guys doubted me to go over the wall, but I practiced this in training, and I’m happy with it.”

Earning his place

The goal rewarded a long journey for Tillman, who narrowly missed Gregg Berhalter’s 2022 World Cup squad. He forced his way into Mauricio Pochettino’s plans with standout performances at last summer’s Gold Cup, where he converted a crucial penalty in a shootout against Costa Rica despite missing one earlier in the match.

Captain Tim Ream praised the midfielder’s development: “He’s been playing so well. I’d argue he’s, other than Balo’s goals, been one of our best players. Everywhere on the field, doing the dirty things, but then making hard things look easy.”

Pochettino added: “It was amazing. I think Malik is an amazing player, full of talent. We knew that he had that talent [on free kicks] to do what he did. I am so happy for him. It was a tough season for him at Leverkusen but I think now he is enjoying, we are enjoying, and the fans are enjoying his play.”

Belgium await

The victory sets up a last-16 meeting with Belgium. Tillman’s set-piece threat will be crucial, particularly with Balogun suspended for the tie. The US are seeking their first World Cup quarter-final appearance since 2002.

The battered right boot that carried Tillman through the match has already begun its journey to the FIFA museum in Zurich, ensuring a permanent place in football history for the attacker’s bloodied, match-winning performance.
