Manchester City have completed the £12.5 million signing of Jeremy Monga from Leicester City, securing one of English football’s most coveted young prospects. The 17-year-old winger chose the Premier League champions over Arsenal, who had also pursued the teenager.

The deal represents a significant investment in youth for City, with head coach Enzo Maresca instrumental in pushing for the transfer. Maresca worked closely with Monga during Leicester’s 2023-24 Championship promotion campaign and advocated for the club to act swiftly to secure the versatile forward.

Record-breaking rise

Monga’s progression through the Leicester academy, which he joined aged eight, has been marked by a series of age-related milestones. In April 2025, he became the second-youngest player to feature in the Premier League, making his debut at 15 years and 271 days old.

His breakthrough moment came last August when, aged 16 years and 34 days, he became the Championship’s youngest-ever goalscorer by netting against Preston North End. The strike eclipsed the previous record held by Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham.

Player’s perspective

The Coventry-born forward, who can operate effectively on either flank, has represented England at various age groups up to Under-19 level. Upon completing the move, Monga cited City’s reputation for developing homegrown talent as a decisive factor in his decision.

“When I became aware that Manchester City were interested, I knew instantly this was the right choice for me,” he told the club’s website. “For any young footballer, to become part of this amazing club is a dream come true. This has been the best club in England over the past 10 years. And it has also handed opportunities to players from the academy like Phil Foden and Nico O’Reilly which shows that the pathway is there. It is a privilege to be here and I’m delighted to have joined.”

Transfer context

Arsenal had been tracking Monga closely and were prepared to compete for his signature, but City’s decisive approach and Maresca’s existing relationship with the player proved influential. The £12.5m fee underscores the premium placed on elite English youth talent in the current market.

Monga will initially link up with City’s development squads, though his senior debut experience and rapid physical development suggest he could challenge for first-team involvement in the coming seasons.
