Manchester United have abandoned their pursuit of Atalanta midfielder Ederson, pulling out of a €45 million transfer agreement that had been struck in June. The decision comes after the club requested and completed additional medical testing on the Brazil international.
Deal Collapse After Medical Tests
The Premier League side had reached a verbal agreement worth €40.5 million in guaranteed fees plus €4.5 million in bonuses for the 25-year-old. However, the deal was not finalised as Ederson was on international duty with Brazil at the 2026 World Cup.
Following Brazil’s elimination from the tournament, Manchester United requested that the player undergo extra intensive medical examinations before granting final approval. These tests were completed over the last 48 hours, yet the club subsequently informed Atalanta that they were withdrawing from the transfer.
Sky Sport Italia and transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano both reported Manchester United’s decision to pull out of the move.
Atalanta’s Response
The Serie A club maintains that the collapse is not related to any medical concerns or long-term injury issues. Atalanta believe Manchester United simply changed their minds about the transfer rather than discovering a physical problem during the examinations.
La Dea point to Ederson’s World Cup participation as evidence of his fitness, noting that he would not have been part of the Brazil squad had he been carrying a serious injury.
What Next for Ederson?
Ederson remains contracted to Atalanta until June 2028, leaving the club with several options. He could now be integrated into the first-team squad under new head coach Maurizio Sarri, who recently took charge of the Bergamo side.
Alternatively, Atalanta may seek alternative buyers for the midfielder elsewhere in the transfer market. The Brazilian had been identified as a key target for Manchester United’s midfield rebuild, but the club’s withdrawal leaves his immediate future uncertain.
