Manchester United midfielder Manuel Ugarte is facing an uncertain period on the sidelines after suffering a knee ligament injury while representing Uruguay at the World Cup. The 25-year-old was carried off on a stretcher during his country’s 1-0 defeat to Spain, which confirmed their elimination from the tournament.
The Incident and Immediate Fallout
The injury occurred shortly before half-time as Uruguay chased the game against Spain. Ugarte appeared to twist awkwardly while closing down Spain midfielder Pedri, collapsing to the turf in visible distress. He was subsequently stretchered from the pitch, tugging his shirt over his face as he left the field.
The defeat proved costly for Uruguay, who finished third in Group H with just two points, ending their campaign at the group stage for the first time since 2002. For Ugarte, however, the personal cost may extend far beyond the disappointment of an early exit.
Assessment and Potential Severity
Manchester United have yet to confirm whether the midfielder damaged his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) or medial collateral ligament (MCL). The distinction is significant; a torn ACL typically requires surgical intervention and many months of rehabilitation, while an MCL injury generally carries a shorter recovery period.
In a statement, United confirmed: “Assessment of the injury is ongoing to determine the best course of treatment and the rehabilitation timescale.” Uruguay’s football federation added: “We will continue working together through the evaluation process to later confirm the full extent and severity of the injury.”
Struggles to Establish Himself
The injury represents another setback in a challenging first season at Old Trafford for the Uruguayan, who joined from Paris Saint-Germain in a deal worth €50 million. Despite high expectations following his arrival, Ugarte started only eight Premier League matches during the 2025-26 campaign, featuring just once in United’s final 16 league fixtures.
He had, however, started all three of Uruguay’s World Cup group matches prior to the injury, suggesting he remained a key figure for his national side despite his club struggles. The coming days will prove crucial in determining whether he faces a routine rehabilitation programme or a lengthy absence that could severely disrupt his pre-season preparations with United.
