Marco Palestra has issued an emotional farewell to Atalanta after completing his transfer to Chelsea, describing the Bergamo club as the place where he “grew up, as a player and as a person.” The Italy international officially joined the Premier League side on Wednesday in a deal reported to be worth €60 million plus add-ons.

The 21-year-old, who joined Atalanta’s academy at the age of 10, used social media to thank the club following 11 years in their system. “I arrived in Bergamo as a child. Atalanta was much more than a club for me: it is a place where I grew up, as a player and as a person,” he wrote. “Here I had the opportunity to follow my dreams, experiencing sensations that I will never forget.”

Transfer details and contract

Chelsea moved swiftly to secure Palestra’s signature ahead of domestic rivals, hijacking a proposed move to Inter that had been valued at approximately €45 million. The London club offered a significantly improved financial package, with reports suggesting the defender will earn over €5 million per season.

The right-back has signed a six-year contract with an option to extend for a further season. Atalanta are expected to retain a 10 per cent sell-on clause from any future transfer, ensuring they benefit if Chelsea eventually move the player on.

Speaking after the move, Palestra expressed enthusiasm about working under manager Xabi. “I’m very excited to get started. I’ve felt the energy since the first day Chelsea wanted me,” he told the club’s official channels. “We have so many talented players here, a very strong squad and manager in Xabi. He has spoken to me about how he wants us to play, which is exciting.”

Career progression and international recognition

Despite making only 16 senior appearances for Atalanta’s first team, Palestra gained valuable experience during a loan spell at Cagliari last season. The defender featured 37 times in Serie A, contributing one goal and four assists, and was named Serie A Defender of the Season for his performances.

He was also part of the Atalanta squad that won the 2023-24 Europa League, though his involvement was largely peripheral. His form in Sardinia earned international recognition, with Palestra making his first two senior appearances for Italy in March 2026.

Primarily a right-back, Palestra offers versatility across defensive and wing-back positions, capable of operating on the left flank or in more advanced roles. Chelsea will hope his technical ability and defensive solidity can bolster their options as they prepare for the new Premier League campaign.
