Mason Greenwood has prioritised a move to Roma this summer, rejecting substantial financial packages from Fenerbahce and Al-Hilal in favour of Champions League football in Italy. The 24-year-old has communicated to the Giallorossi hierarchy that their project represents his preferred destination, despite having reportedly agreed personal terms with the Turkish club.
Valuation Gap and FFP Constraints
However, significant obstacles remain before the forward can complete his switch from Marseille. The French side are demanding €55 million for the striker, partly because they must forward 40 per cent of any transfer fee to Manchester United under the terms of last year’s €26 million deal. Marseille face pressure to sell amid a serious financial crisis, creating a June 30 deadline for incoming funds.
Roma are preparing an offer in the region of €45-50 million, potentially structured in instalments to accommodate Marseille’s timeline whilst bridging the valuation gap. Yet the Italian club face their own complications, with Financial Fair Play settlements requiring them to sell players such as Matias Soulé or Manu Koné before they can formally submit their proposal.
Turkish and Saudi Proposals Dismissed
The delay has allowed rival clubs to intensify their pursuit. Fenerbahce submitted an initial €30 million bid that French reports described as “disrespectful”, before seeing an improved €35 million offer rejected as insufficient. The Turkish club reportedly offered Greenwood a base salary of €12 million per season plus extensive performance bonuses tied to goals and trophies.
Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal have also tabled proposals described by sources as almost beyond market value for both club and player. At 24 and playing at his peak, however, Greenwood remains unmoved by these financial incentives, prioritising European football at the highest level and the platform to potentially revive his England prospects.
Pre-Season Timeline Adds Pressure
Time is emerging as the critical factor in negotiations. According to reports, Greenwood aims to begin pre-season training with his new club during the opening ten days of July, creating a narrow window for Roma to finalise an agreement. Marseille are reportedly more favourable towards a sale to the Italian club than to Fenerbahce as things stand, but the valuation difference must be resolved swiftly to meet the forward’s deadline.
