Matteo Ruggeri will remain at Atlético Madrid this summer despite attracting concrete interest from Serie A clubs, his agent has confirmed.
Tullio Tinti told Sky Sport Italy that the 24-year-old Italian left-back is staying in the Spanish capital, closing the door on approaches from Roma and Fiorentina. Premier League side Nottingham Forest had also inquired about Ruggeri during the January window.
Contract and arrival
Ruggeri completed his transfer from Atalanta last July for a fee understood to be under €20 million. He committed to a long-term contract running until 2030, ensuring Atlético retain full control over any future departure.
Squad dynamics shift
The defender’s status within Diego Simeone’s rotation became significantly more secure following confirmation that fellow left-back Julio Díaz has agreed terms to join Sevilla. With Díaz’s exit, Ruggeri is positioned to serve as backup and rotational starter for Álex Grimaldo.
Uneven first season
Ruggeri’s debut campaign at the Metropolitano delivered mixed results. Following a slow start, he found rhythm in the new year, supplying seven assists across a 17-match sequence between late January and early April. He also played his part in Atlético’s Champions League quarterfinal triumph over Barcelona.
However, consistency eluded him in domestic competition. His performances in La Liga fluctuated, and he struggled during the Copa del Rey final defeat to Real Sociedad on penalties.
Tinti characterised the campaign as “extraordinary” when speaking to Sky Sport, though that assessment contrasts with the defensive lapses that limited his minutes in high-stakes fixtures.
Market context
While media reports had suggested sporting director Mateu Alemany might sanction a sale to generate funds, Tinti’s statement confirms Ruggeri was never available for transfer. The player’s desire to honour his contract, combined with reduced competition following Díaz’s move to Andalusia, has clarified his role for the upcoming season.
Retaining Ruggeri provides Simeone with cover on the left flank, though the Italian’s one-on-one defending remains a work in progress. His attacking output, particularly his delivery from wide areas, offers a viable alternative when Grimaldo requires rest.
With eight years remaining on his deal, Atlético are under no pressure to sell. Should Roma, Fiorentina or English clubs maintain their interest, they would need to submit a substantial bid to tempt the Spanish side into a reconsideration.
