Max Allegri has arrived in Naples ahead of his official unveiling as Napoli head coach on Tuesday, signalling the beginning of a new era for the Serie A side. The 58-year-old touched down in the city on Monday evening and will be presented to supporters and media at the historic Teatro San Carlo at 11:30 local time.
The appointment marks Allegri’s return to the dugout following his departure from Milan earlier this summer. The coach had to negotiate the termination of his existing contract with the Rossoneri after his sudden dismissal before he could formalise his move to the Partenopei. This administrative delay contributed to Napoli’s relatively static start to the summer compared with their domestic rivals.
Vergara secures long-term deal
While Allegri prepared for his presentation, Napoli secured the long-term future of homegrown talent Antonio Vergara. The 23-year-old has agreed a contract extension that will keep him at the club until June 2031.
Under the terms of the new agreement, Vergara’s salary will start at €1 million per season and rise over the coming years. The versatile creative midfielder, who can also operate as a winger, faced an uncertain future last term when he was initially on the verge of a loan exit. However, an injury crisis that reduced options in the senior squad granted him unexpected opportunities, and he subsequently established himself as a starring figure during the campaign.
Squad rebuilding
Allegri inherits a squad facing significant financial constraints. Napoli are currently operating under restrictions that require player sales before they can register new signings, leaving them slower than many Serie A rivals in their pre-season preparations. The resolution of Allegri’s appointment is expected to allow the club to accelerate their transfer strategy.
The Tuscan tactician will hope to assess his resources immediately after Tuesday’s presentation as the club works to restore momentum ahead of the new season.
