Maxim Dal has completed his transfer from 1.FSV Mainz 05 to SpVgg Greuther Fürth, both clubs confirmed. The 20-year-old centre-back ends a ten-year association with the Bundesliga side to seek regular playing time in the 2. Bundesliga.
Dal joined Mainz as a youth player and progressed through every age group at the club. He was part of the squad that lifted the German A-Junior Championship trophy in 2023 and also featured in the UEFA Youth League, helping the team reach the quarter-finals.
Despite his potential, first-team opportunities at Mainz proved limited. Mainz sporting director Niko Bungert explained that competition for places in central defence left little room for the young player to break through. “Maxim is a fantastic young man who has progressed through almost all of our youth teams. He has great potential,” Bungert said. “However, the competition for his position in our Bundesliga team is currently so fierce that the likelihood of him getting playing time there is very low.”
The defender had been gaining experience with Mainz’s U23 side in the Regionalliga, where he established himself as a regular starter. Bungert noted that Dal’s performances at that level attracted attention from clubs seeking defensive reinforcements.
Greuther Fürth will now provide the platform for Dal to take the next step in his career at professional level. The 2. Bundesliga club will hope Dal’s championship-winning pedigree and decade of defensive development translate into strong performances in the second tier.
The move represents a significant change for the academy graduate, who leaves having spent his entire footballing education at Mainz. For Greuther Fürth, securing a player with extensive experience within a top-flight German academy offers defensive depth and long-term potential as they look to establish themselves in the division.
