AC Milan’s attempt to sign Benfica defender Antonio Silva has stalled after talks involving agent Jorge Mendes failed to produce the breakthrough the Rossoneri had anticipated. Rather than sanctioning a departure, the Portuguese giants are intensifying efforts to tie the centre-back to a new contract featuring a substantial pay rise.
Silva, whose deal runs until 30 June 2027, finds himself at the centre of a transfer tug-of-war. Benfica president Rui Costa and sporting director Mario Branco have made clear they will not accept the €20 million figure floated by Mendes’ camp, refusing to negotiate at a discount for the 2003-born talent. New manager Marco Silva has also indicated that he expects the defender to remain at the Estádio da Luz.
Amorim connection tempts Silva
Despite Benfica’s strong stance, the Portuguese defender is reluctant to commit his future without exploring alternatives. The opportunity to join Milan and reunite with fellow countryman Ruben Amorim, who coaches the Serie A side, represents an attractive prospect. Silva received a renewal proposal in mid-May but has opted to weigh his options as the window progresses.
The contract conundrum
The impasse leaves Benfica facing an awkward strategic choice. With just one year remaining on Silva’s deal, the club risks losing the player for nothing in 2027 should they fail to secure an extension. Milan are content to wait, leveraging the ticking clock to their advantage, although the player prefers a swift resolution to the uncertainty.
Until Benfica soften their valuation or Silva agrees to fresh terms, the standoff looks set to continue. The Lisbon club’s hierarchy appear prepared to hold firm, betting that a combination of improved wages and sporting ambition can keep their defender in Portugal for at least another season.
