Newcastle United have officially announced the signing of France U20 international Aladji Bamba from AS Monaco, securing the midfielder on a five-year contract that runs until 2031. The deal is valued at €41 million including performance-related bonuses, with the Principality club retaining a percentage of any future transfer fee.
The 20-year-old completed his medical on Tyneside and becomes Eddie Howe’s latest recruit as the Magpies continue reshaping their squad. The transfer represents a significant profit on a player developed through Monaco’s academy system after joining from Blois in 2021.
Rapid rise through the ranks
Bamba progressed methodically through Monaco’s youth setup before making his senior debut in August 2025. By the end of last season, the French Under-20 international had accumulated 25 first-team appearances for the Monégasques, registering two assists. He has earned seven caps for France at U20 level.
Operating primarily as a defensive midfielder, Bamba is noted for his ability to disrupt opposition attacks and distribute from deep. His breakthrough performances earned a Golden Boy award nomination prior to the move, marking him as one of French football’s emerging prospects.
Monaco exodus begins
The sale of Bamba signals the start of a busy summer window at the Stade Louis II. Monaco expect to sanction further high-profile departures in the coming weeks, with striker Folarin Balogun and attacking midfielder Maghnes Akliouche both due to finalise moves away from the club. These sales will provide funds for manager Adi Hütter to strengthen his own squad.
For Newcastle, the acquisition addresses a priority position. The club had been actively seeking midfield reinforcements following the departure of Sandro Tonali, while Brazil international Bruno Guimarães continues to attract interest from Arsenal. Bamba will compete for a place in Howe’s starting eleven alongside Sean Longstaff and Joelinton as the squad prepares for the new campaign.
