Newcastle United have emerged as surprise contenders to sign Borussia Dortmund midfielder Felix Nmecha, with head coach Eddie Howe reportedly holding a long-standing interest in the Germany international.
Sky Sports reports that the Magpies have joined a growing list of Premier League clubs monitoring the 25-year-old. Howe apparently weighed up a move for Nmecha in 2023 before ultimately securing Sandro Tonali from Milan instead. Two years on, the English tactician could finally get his man, though significant obstacles remain.
Premier League competition intensifies
Nmecha is attracting considerable attention from England’s elite. United, City and Liverpool are also monitoring developments, having been linked with the midfielder in recent weeks.
The former Wolfsburg player has established himself as a regular starter at Signal Iduna Park, earning caps for Germany in the process. His performances have positioned him as one of the Bundesliga’s notable talents, explaining the sudden rush of interest from across the Channel.
Contract uncertainty complicates deal
Any potential transfer faces immediate complications regarding the player’s contractual situation. Sky Sports suggests Nmecha possesses an €85 million release clause that would facilitate a departure from Dortmund.
However, German publications dispute this claim, stating that no active release clause exists until 2027. This discrepancy regarding the exact terms could significantly impact negotiations, with the German club potentially demanding a substantial fee regardless of the technicalities involved.
The interest currently remains at the monitoring stage. Dortmund are likely to resist losing a key midfielder unless their valuation is met, leaving Newcastle and their rivals to assess whether to formalise their interest or pursue alternative targets.
