Olympique Lyonnais defender Nicolás Tagliafico is considering a return to his native Argentina once his contract with the French club concludes in June 2027. The experienced left-back has indicated that a desire to be closer to his family, particularly if he starts a family of his own, is a key factor in his future planning.

Tagliafico, who is 34, has been a prominent figure for Lyon for four years, having joined them after arriving in Europe in 2018 to play for Dutch giants Ajax. His current deal with Lyon runs until the summer of 2027, prompting him to evaluate his options for the next stage of his career.

Speaking about his future, Tagliafico stated, “My contract ends in June 2027 and I don’t have any children. But if I do have children and want to be closer to my family, perhaps we’ll return to Argentina.” This sentiment suggests a strong personal motivation behind his potential move back to South America.

A Decorated International Career

Beyond his club commitments, Tagliafico boasts an illustrious international career with Argentina. He has earned 84 caps for his country and played a crucial role in some of their most significant recent successes. He was a key member of the squad that lifted the 2022 FIFA World Cup, as well as securing back-to-back Copa América triumphs in 2021 and 2024.

His potential departure would mark the end of a significant chapter in European football for the defender, who has established himself as a reliable and decorated player both domestically and on the international stage. As his contract approaches its final year, the coming months may provide more clarity on Tagliafico’s decision regarding his future beyond Lyon.
