Mikayil Faye has completed a switch to 2. Bundesliga side Nürnberg from French club Stade Rennais, with the German outfit securing his services on a temporary basis. The agreement includes an option to make the transfer permanent once the one-year loan concludes, offering the Senegal international a fresh opportunity to revive his career.
The 22-year-old previously moved to Brittany from Barcelona for a fee exceeding €10 million, though he departed Catalonia without making a senior appearance for the La Liga giants. Following a challenging debut season in Ligue 1, the centre-back spent the previous campaign with Italian side Cremonese. However, he managed just two starting appearances in Serie A as the club suffered relegation.
Faye has also found opportunities limited at international level despite an impressive debut. He marked his first appearance for Senegal with a goal against Gabon in March 2024, though that remains his only cap to date.
Club backing for “potential”
Nürnberg’s board member Joti Chatzialexiou acknowledged that patience will be required as Faye adapts to German football. “Mikayil (Faye) has already gained experience in several teams at his young age. He brings a lot of potential for us, and we are happy that he is coming to us,” Chatzialexiou stated. “During his last loan (with Cremonense), he only played a few games. Our goal is to get him to the competition level of 2. Bundesliga. We will need patience.”
The defender himself expressed determination to justify the faith shown in him. “I would like to thank the FCN hierarchy for seeing so much potential in me. I want to pay back this trust on the pitch, and I am very much looking forward to getting to know the team and the league,” Faye said upon confirming the move.
Career reset in Germany
The switch represents a crucial juncture for the former Barcelona prospect, who has struggled to establish himself since leaving La Masia. Regular playing time in the 2. Bundesliga could prove essential for his development, particularly with the Africa Cup of Nations cycle continuing and Senegal boasting considerable depth in defensive positions.
Nürnberg will hope that Faye can quickly reach match fitness and contribute to their campaign, having identified his versatility and physical attributes as valuable assets for the season ahead. The club retains the flexibility to make the arrangement permanent should the loan prove successful.
