OGC Nice have opened advanced negotiations to secure FC Metz captain Gauthier Hein, according to Foot Mercato. The 29-year-old attacker could remain in Ligue 1 despite his club’s relegation to the second tier last season.

Hein’s impact at Metz

The Frenchman returned to Metz from AJ Auxerre two years ago, choosing to drop down a division despite Auxerre’s promotion to the top flight. He quickly established himself as a pivotal figure, eventually captaining Les Grenats to an immediate return to the elite.

During the recent Ligue 1 campaign, Hein recorded eight goals and seven assists. However, these individual contributions could not prevent Metz from suffering an immediate return to Ligue 2, leaving their captain facing another campaign outside the top division.

Nice’s restructuring

Nice endured their own difficulties last term, narrowly avoiding relegation from the top flight. The club have since initiated a rebuilding project under new manager Olivier Pantaloni, with a new sporting director also expected to arrive shortly.

Hein has emerged as a key target in their recruitment strategy. The experienced forward would bring creativity and proven top-flight pedigree to a squad aiming to climb the table next season.

Transfer situation

While discussions between the player and Les Aiglons are described as advanced, no official offer has been submitted to Metz. The Ligue 2 side would face losing their captain if the move progresses, though the absence of a formal bid means no deal is currently in place.

Should the transfer materialise, it would allow Hein to maintain his top-flight status two years after demonstrating loyalty to Metz during their previous relegation.
