Olympique de Marseille will prioritise player sales this summer before strengthening new manager Bruno Genesio’s squad, as the French club works to meet strict financial requirements imposed by the DNCG, the country’s football financial watchdog.
Financial Constraints Force Fire Sale
The Ligue 1 side must slash their annual wage bill from approximately €160 million to below €100 million to comply with regulatory demands. Club officials have informed the DNCG that significant sales will take place throughout the transfer window to achieve this reduction.
Genesio, who recently took charge of the team, faces a challenging first window in which departures will dominate over arrivals. The former Lille manager inherits a squad requiring substantial trimming before any new signings can be targeted.
Five Senior Players Made Available
Sporting director Grégory Lorenzi has circulated a list of available players to agents in an effort to accelerate exits. The names include defenders Ulisses Garcia and Geoffrey Kondogbia, midfielders Amine Harit, forward Neal Maupay, and veteran striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
Aubameyang presents the most high-profile case. The 37-year-old Gabon international has attracted interest from clubs in Turkey, Major League Soccer, Saudi Arabia and Spain. Despite this overseas attention, Marseille have not dismissed the possibility of the experienced forward remaining under Genesio should no suitable offer materialise.
Implications for Genesio’s Rebuild
The financial restrictions leave Genesio in a difficult position as he attempts to reshape a squad that underperformed last season. Without the necessary sales, the club lacks the wage budget flexibility to register new signings.
The situation reflects broader financial pressures facing several French top-flight clubs. Marseille supporters will hope that Lorenzi can secure favourable deals for the out-of-favour players, allowing Genesio to rebuild within the reduced budget parameters set by the authorities.
