Šulc Reflects on Summer Transfer Window
Olympique Lyonnais midfielder Pavel Šulc has opened up about the summer transfer window, revealing that his departure from the French club was widely expected by management. The Czech international, now in his second season with Lyon, was reportedly a target for English side Leeds United and Italian giants Juventus.
Šulc confirmed that clubs had made contact regarding his availability, though discussions never progressed to the financial stage. He ultimately remained at Lyon, despite the club’s expectations for him to move on.
Lyon’s Financial Context and Expected Departure
During the summer, Olympique Lyonnais faced significant financial challenges. These issues led the club’s management to anticipate the versatile Czech midfielder’s exit, as they sought to generate funds to stabilise their financial position. Šulc himself acknowledged this situation, stating in an interview with ČT Sport, “My departure was entirely expected.”
Despite the club’s readiness to see him leave, Šulc indicated he preferred not to be directly involved in the specifics of potential interest. He explained, “But I asked the directors and the club to give me specific details. I didn’t want to know if any clubs were interested.”
Reported Interest and Unresolved Finances
Reports linked Šulc with moves to Championship club Leeds United and Serie A powerhouse Juventus. While the player confirmed that contact was made by interested parties, he noted that financial negotiations did not materialise. Šulc explained that “the financial aspect wasn’t discussed,” adding that he was informed clubs “didn’t want to pay that much.”
Ultimately, no agreement was reached, and the 25-year-old remained with Les Gones for the current campaign.
Current Season Contributions
Having overcome a few minor fitness issues that hampered him earlier, Šulc has since returned to action for Olympique Lyonnais. He has made seven appearances for the club since the start of the season, contributing three assists to his team’s efforts. His continued presence provides a boost to Lyon as they navigate their domestic campaign.
