Crystal Palace have opened talks with representatives of Charlie Cresswell as the Toulouse defender favours a return to the Premier League, according to reports. The London club face competition from Stade Rennais, who hope to lure the England youth international to Brittany for their Europa League campaign.

The 23-year-old centre-back has attracted significant interest following an impressive spell in Ligue 1. Cresswell joined Toulouse from Leeds United in 2024 for a modest €5 million fee, but the French club now value him at upwards of €25 million—a five-fold increase reflecting his rapid development.

Palace move to secure replacement

Crystal Palace’s pursuit appears linked to the potential departure of Maxence Lacroix, with the France international attracting strong interest from Chelsea. Should Lacroix leave Selhurst Park, Palace view Cresswell as a primary target to strengthen their defensive ranks.

The former Leeds trainee has established himself as a regular starter in France, though his former manager Carles Martinez Novell recently departed for Bayer Leverkusen. This managerial change, combined with Toulouse’s financial constraints, has placed Cresswell among the club’s most marketable assets.

Rennes provide continental alternative

Stade Rennais have maintained a long-standing interest in the defender and scouted him throughout the recent campaign. Their return to the UEFA Europa League next season offers Cresswell the prospect of continental football, presenting a compelling alternative to English shores.

However, sources indicate the player prefers a return to the Premier League, giving Palace an advantage in negotiations despite Rennes’ European qualification.

Valuation stands in the way

Any transfer requires substantial investment. Toulouse are obliged to sell players this summer to balance their accounts, yet they remain firm on their valuation. Both interested clubs must meet the €25 million asking price to secure the centre-back’s signature.

The coming weeks will prove decisive as Cresswell weighs his options. He must choose between an immediate return to English football with Palace or a switch to Rennes, where European competition awaits.
