Stade Rennais are on the verge of securing the signature of Charlie Cresswell from Toulouse FC, with reports indicating a final agreement is imminent. The Breton club have tabled an offer understood to be worth approximately €25 million, with potential bonuses of up to €3 million taking the total package closer to €28 million.

The 23-year-old centre-back has attracted significant attention from across Europe following an impressive campaign in Ligue 1. Having joined Toulouse from Leeds United in 2024, Cresswell established himself as a defensive cornerstone, starting 31 of 32 league matches during the 2025-26 season. His contributions extended beyond solid defensive displays, with the Preston-born defender registering four goals and three assists from central defence.

Rivals Left Behind

Rennes faced stiff competition for Cresswell’s services throughout the negotiation process. Both West Ham United and VfL Wolfsburg had expressed strong interest in acquiring the England Under-21 European champion, presenting viable alternatives for the player. However, the Ligue 1 side have reportedly convinced Cresswell to remain in France through a lucrative financial arrangement that would place him among the three highest earners at the club.

European Stage Awaits

The proposed move addresses Rennes’ search for defensive reinforcements and represents a significant step forward in Cresswell’s career trajectory. Should the transfer proceed as expected, he will make his debut in European competition next season. Rennes have secured qualification for the Europa League, offering the defender his first taste of continental football at senior level.

Cresswell developed through the Leeds United academy system before securing his permanent switch to Toulouse last year. His rapid adaptation to French football has marked him as one of the most promising English defenders currently playing abroad, with his consistent performances alerting several top-tier clubs to his availability.
