Stade Rennais have reportedly identified Sunderland forward Elyezer Mayenda as a summer transfer target as the French club looks to strengthen its squad ahead of their return to European competition.

The Ligue 1 side are monitoring the 21-year-old, who remains under contract with the Championship club until 2030. Mayenda contributed two goals and one assist in 24 appearances across all competitions last season, a return that fell below expectations but has not diminished interest in his versatility and potential.

Rennes have already been active in the current window, securing the signatures of Gonçalo Oliveira, Issa Soumaré and Adrien Thomasson. The addition of further attacking options is viewed as essential as the club prepares to balance domestic duties with a Europa League campaign.

According to Foot Mercato, the French outfit appreciate Mayenda’s qualities and could move quickly to make the deal a priority. However, the pursuit remains at an exploratory stage, with no formal bid or personal terms agreed.

Sunderland hold a commanding position in any negotiations given the length of the forward’s contract, which secures his services for another five years. This long-term commitment means the Black Cats are under no pressure to sell and can demand a substantial fee should they choose to entertain offers.

The trio of arrivals already secured by Rennes demonstrates their intent to rebuild their squad ahead of the new season. However, the pursuit of Mayenda suggests the club remains active in the market as they seek additional attacking depth to cope with the demands of competing in the Europa League alongside Ligue 1 fixtures.

For Mayenda, a switch to France would offer the prospect of European football, though any departure from the Stadium of Light would require the clubs to find common ground on valuation. The situation remains fluid as the transfer window progresses, with Rennes assessing their options before deciding whether to table a concrete offer.
