Riyad Mahrez is attempting to engineer a return to European football. The Algeria international has reportedly offered himself to Serie A clubs after becoming a free agent, with his contract at Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli terminated a year early.

At 35, the former Manchester City and Leicester City winger remains a decorated operator with extensive experience at the highest level. However, identifying a suitable destination in Italy presents significant obstacles, with reports noting that a concrete opening is proving difficult to find despite his availability.

Complications across the chasing pack

Six clubs have emerged in connection with the veteran forward, though each scenario presents distinct complications.

Roma are actively pursuing attacking reinforcements, yet their right-sided areas are congested. The club is finalising a contract renewal for Paulo Dybala, while Matias Soulé occupies a similar interior role, limiting space for another player who drifts inside from the right.

Juventus operate under stringent financial conditions following a UEFA settlement agreement, placing their spending under close scrutiny. A move for Mahrez would likely require a departure up front, such as Lois Openda, to create both the budget and squad space.

Inter Milan present a more straightforward financial picture, free from settlement restrictions, and sporting director Beppe Marotta has a reputation for exploiting free-agent opportunities. Yet the Nerazzurri’s immediate priorities lie elsewhere, specifically in securing a replacement for Denzel Dumfries and recruiting defensive reinforcements.

Como could theoretically utilise an experienced head for their European campaign, particularly if Álvaro Morata departs. However, manager Cesc Fàbregas and the club’s hierarchy favour younger profiles, leaving Mahrez as little more than a speculative option.

The situation at Milan appears equally complex. Manager Ruben Amorim is building his attack around Christopher Nkunku, Christian Pulisic and Gonçalo Ramos, while the future of Rafael Leão remains unresolved. There is scant room for another ageing wide forward.

Napoli face a different problem entirely. The Partenopei must trim a bloated squad that currently numbers 47 players, packed with wide forwards, making additions impractical before departures occur.

What next for Mahrez?

The Algerian is available immediately and willing to accept a Serie A project, but the lack of clear tactical or financial openings at the league’s leading clubs leaves his future uncertain. Without a significant injury crisis or sudden departure at one of these sides, the decorated winger may need to look beyond Italy’s top tier to continue his career.
