PULSER FOOTBALL NEWS-4

Roma coach Gian Piero Gasperini has emphasised the critical need for a more robust and deeper squad to effectively compete across three competitions. His comments follow a challenging period for the Giallorossi, highlighted by a 4-3 loss to Real Madrid and a mounting injury crisis.

During the match against Real Madrid, Roma conceded three goals in a rapid seven-minute spell, turning a 3-1 lead into a defeat. Compounding the setback, key players Paulo Dybala and Manu Koné both sustained injuries during the game. These new concerns add to an already depleted squad, with Mile Svilar, Bryan Cristante, and Donyell Malen also unavailable for selection.

Squad Depth Concerns

Gasperini highlighted the demanding schedule, noting that Roma will play their third match in seven days this Saturday, followed by a fourth in ten days next Tuesday. He stressed that modern football, particularly for teams involved in European competitions, necessitates a broader squad to manage player fitness and rotation.

The manager acknowledged the immediate challenges, stating that players like Castro and Mora are expected to feature prominently in the upcoming fixtures. He also indicated that the club might need to rely on academy players, with the possibility of a Primavera player making their debut due to the limited options.

Looking Ahead to Genoa

Roma are set to host Genoa at the Stadio Olimpico this Saturday. Gasperini confirmed that midfielder Pellegrini could be deployed in a deeper role to compensate for the absences, while expressing hope that Cristante might recover in time for the subsequent match against Napoli.

Reflecting on the Real Madrid defeat, Gasperini described the three goals conceded from set-pieces as an ‘anomaly’. However, he reiterated that the incident underscores the broader issue of squad depth and the need for all players, including younger talents, to be ready to step up and contribute.

While acknowledging that immediate market additions are not feasible, Gasperini’s remarks clearly signal his belief that a more extensive roster is essential for Roma to navigate the rigours of a demanding season and maintain competitiveness on all fronts.
