Germany director of professional football Rudi Völler has issued a stark warning to Julian Nagelsmann’s squad regarding midfield errors ahead of their World Cup last-16 tie against Paraguay on Monday.

Völler acknowledged that Germany’s progress as Group E winners was encouraging, but he highlighted a recurring issue during the final group matches against Ivory Coast and Ecuador. He noted that players had surrendered possession cheaply in central areas when attempting to move forward.

Midfield lapses targeted

Speaking at a press conference on Saturday, Völler praised the squad’s spirit but identified a specific technical flaw that requires immediate correction. “Even when things got tricky, we showed tremendous passion and fighting spirit,” he said. “In the second and third games, however, we gave the ball away unnecessarily in midfield when looking to go forward.”

Völler stressed that such mistakes carry greater consequences in the knockout phase. “Teams such as Ivory Coast and Ecuador are capable of punishing those mistakes,” he warned. “Not everything will always come off, but we can’t afford to make those errors in crucial areas.”

He balanced this criticism by affirming Germany’s attacking approach, stating: “We have players whose strengths lie in creating chances, dribbling and taking risks, and we want them to do that, provided it is balanced with the necessary discipline.”

Context of Ecuador defeat

Germany secured their place at the top of Group E with victories in their opening fixtures, including a 2-1 win over Ivory Coast. They subsequently lost by the same scoreline to Ecuador in their final group match, though Völler dismissed concerns about that result.

He explained that Nagelsmann’s side had already confirmed their first-place finish before kick-off, allowing for strategic squad management. “We went into the Ecuador game knowing we had already qualified,” Völler said. “We wanted to maintain our momentum, so we made relatively few changes, which was the right decision.”

Second-half substitutions were designed specifically to prepare key personnel for the knockout stages. “We made several substitutions in the second half with the knockout stages in mind and rested a few players. That was also the right decision, regardless of the result,” he added.

Paraguay challenge awaits

Despite the setback against Ecuador, Völler remains confident about Germany’s prospects against Paraguay. “We would obviously have liked to win, but we can take the defeat in our stride and put it into context,” he concluded. “We remain a team capable of beating anyone when we perform at our best.”

The round-of-32 encounter takes place on Monday, with Germany seeking to advance beyond the initial knockout phase of the tournament.
