Freiburg enter race for relegated Metz winger
SC Freiburg have registered interest in signing Georgian winger Giorgi Tsitaishvili, who is currently a free agent after suffering relegation from Ligue 1 with FC Metz last season.
The Bundesliga side are monitoring the attacker as they assess options to strengthen their squad. Tsitaishvili departed the French club following their demotion to the second tier, leaving him available to negotiate with potential suitors without a transfer fee.
Lorient lead chase amid French preference
Despite Freiburg’s interest, FC Lorient currently occupy pole position in the race for Tsitaishvili’s signature. The French club are pushing hard to secure the deal, with the player understood to favour remaining in the country.
However, Freiburg face competition from beyond Germany as well. Eredivisie side PSV Eindhoven have also expressed interest in securing the versatile wide man’s services, creating a three-way battle for the free agent.
Georgian heritage offers Freiburg connection
Freiburg may hold a historical advantage in their pursuit thanks to the club’s previous ties with Georgian football. During the early 2000s, the German outfit was home to several prominent Georgia internationals, including Aleksandre Iashvili, Levan Kobiashvili, and Levan Tsitaishvili.
This established track record with players from the Caucasus nation could prove persuasive as the winger weighs up his next career move. With Tsitaishvili available without a fee, the coming weeks will determine whether he opts to remain in France with Lorient, test himself in the Bundesliga with Freiburg, or accept a move to the Eredivisie with PSV Eindhoven.
