SL Benfica have emerged as frontrunners to sign Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Equi Fernández, with the Bundesliga champions willing to part ways with the Argentine just twelve months after his arrival, according to Bild.
The Portuguese giants are reportedly prepared to offer €20 million to secure the 23-year-old’s services. Leverkusen, however, are seeking to recover the full €25 million they paid to Saudi Arabian club Al Qadsiah when they triggered his release clause last summer.
Fernández joined the BayArena outfit following his stint in the Middle East but found regular starting opportunities difficult to secure. During his debut campaign in German football, he made 30 appearances across all competitions, contributing one assist. The midfielder failed to establish himself as a first-choice option in a crowded central department.
Narrow gap offers hope of deal
Despite the difference in valuation, the relatively modest €5 million gap between Benfica’s reported offer and Leverkusen’s asking price leaves room for compromise. Sources indicate that an agreement could be reached if the Portuguese club increase their bid slightly or if Leverkusen soften their stance to facilitate a quick sale before the window closes.
The German champions are actively looking to streamline their squad following their breakthrough season, and moving Fernández on would free up resources for other targets. The midfielder, who operates primarily in central areas, has not fully adapted to the intensity of the Bundesliga since his switch from the Saudi Pro League.
Next steps
Benfica’s interest provides Fernández with a route back to competitive European football after his brief Saudi Arabian detour. The move would offer the Argentina international an opportunity to reignite his career in one of Europe’s established leagues, with regular playing time a priority for the 23-year-old.
With the transfer window remaining open, further talks are expected between the two clubs to bridge the financial divide. Leverkusen are motivated sellers, which could ultimately force their hand if no other suitors emerge to match their €25 million valuation. A resolution may depend on whether Benfica are willing to meet the Germans halfway or if Leverkusen accept a minor loss to complete the transfer.
