Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente has strongly condemned the behaviour of Argentina players following the World Cup final, describing post-match confrontations as “intolerable, unacceptable” amid a FIFA investigation into the incidents.
The clashes occurred immediately after Spain secured their second World Cup title. Argentina defender Nahuel Molina and midfielder Leandro Paredes were reportedly involved in physical altercations with Spain’s Rodri and Eric García respectively. Paredes also confronted young midfielder Gavi during the flashpoint, with footage circulating widely across social media platforms.
Coach praises squad composure
Speaking to Spanish television, De la Fuente explained that he had not witnessed the confrontations in real time, having been absorbed in celebrations of Spain’s historic victory. However, he left no doubt about his stance on the matter.
“Intolerable, unacceptable,” the coach stated, referring to the conduct of players he had previously praised and respected. He suggested that those involved would have felt uncomfortable watching replays of their own behaviour.
De la Fuente particularly praised the composure demonstrated by his own squad when faced with what he characterised as “acts of aggression” and “provocations”, noting that the situation could have escalated into more serious incidents.
FIFA investigation under way
World football’s governing body has launched a formal investigation to determine whether its disciplinary code was violated during the post-final disturbances. Despite the availability of extensive video evidence documenting the scenes, no sanctions have yet been issued against the Argentina players involved.
The investigation will assess whether the alleged attacks and confrontations breach FIFA regulations regarding player conduct at official tournaments. The absence of immediate punishment suggests the disciplinary process will follow standard procedural timelines rather than emergency measures.
The controversy has cast a shadow over Spain’s achievement in winning the World Cup for the second time in the nation’s history. De la Fuente maintained that players of such stature should not have reacted in the manner shown on camera, regardless of the high emotions typically associated with World Cup finals.
FIFA’s investigation remains ongoing. The governing body will determine whether disciplinary action is warranted once all evidence has been reviewed, with potential sanctions ranging from fines to suspensions if violations are confirmed.
