Spain delivered a commanding performance to defeat Austria 3-0 in the World Cup last 16, securing a quarter-final berth and their first victory in the knockout rounds since they won the tournament in 2010. Mikel Oyarzabal struck twice and Pedro Porro added a third as Luis de la Fuente’s side set up a meeting with either Portugal or Croatia.

The victory showcased Spain’s familiar dominance, with 64 per cent possession and 23 attempts on goal. De la Fuente’s players controlled proceedings from the opening stages, with Lamine Yamal testing the Austrian goalkeeper within the first minute and setting the tone for an intense attacking display.

Oyarzabal double seals comfortable progression

Spain broke the deadlock after 36 minutes when Pedri found Marc Cucurella advancing on the left, and the full-back’s low cross was converted first time by Oyarzabal. The goal capped a period of sustained pressure that had seen an earlier effort ruled out for a foul on the goalkeeper.

Austria attempted to respond, with Konrad Laimer and Marcel Sabitzer creating chances, but Spain’s defence held firm. The second goal arrived when Álex Baena recovered possession and delivered a cross for Porro to head home. Oyarzabal completed the scoring late on, finishing a flowing move that started with goalkeeper Unai Simón and ended with the striker slotting home in the 89th minute.

Simón breaks Casillas record in historic clean sheet

Behind the attacking flair, Unai Simón continued his outstanding tournament between the posts. The Athletic Bilbao goalkeeper kept his fourth consecutive clean sheet, breaking Iker Casillas’s record from Spain’s victorious 2010 campaign. Centre-backs Pau Cubarsí and Aymeric Laporte again impressed, helping restrict Austria to limited opportunities despite the efforts of Michael Gregoritsch and substitute Sasa Kalajdzic.

Manager reactions and quarter-final outlook

De la Fuente praised his team’s focus, calling the display “almost perfect” and noting that “big teams turn up when they’re needed.” Austria head coach Ralf Rangnick acknowledged that his side remained competitive until the second goal but found Spain’s quality difficult to contain across the full match.

The result sets up a quarter-final clash for Spain against either Portugal or Croatia. De la Fuente will hope his side can maintain their defensive solidity and attacking rhythm as they seek a first World Cup triumph since their 2010 success in South Africa.
