VfB Stuttgart will not recruit a replacement goalkeeper despite losing first-choice Dennis Seimen to injury until at least the end of September. Manager Sebastian Hoeneß has confirmed the Bundesliga club will rely on their existing options as they prepare for a return to Champions League football.
Seimen, who is expected to reclaim the number one spot upon his recovery, faces an extended spell on the sidelines. The Germany Under-21 international suffered the setback ahead of the new campaign, leaving Stuttgart to assess their goalkeeping resources ahead of a demanding season on multiple fronts.
Speaking after a 5-0 pre-season victory over FSV Hollenbach, Hoeneß outlined the club’s position and his conversations with the injured player. The coach revealed he had spoken with Seimen about the disappointment of the injury, noting the goalkeeper is “already back in the mode of looking forward.” The medical team is working to accelerate the rehabilitation process, with Hoeneß confirming they are “doing everything we can to get him back as quickly as possible.”
Regarding cover during Seimen’s absence, Hoeneß emphasised that the club is “very satisfied with the goalkeeping team and especially with Fabi [Fabian Bredlow].” He stated: “As it stands now, we see no need to bring in a new goalkeeper. Generally, we have confidence in our boys.”
Seimen had established himself as Stuttgart’s primary option between the posts following a productive loan spell with second-tier Paderborn, where he played a crucial role in securing their promotion to the Bundesliga. The 21-year-old returned to his parent club to succeed Alexander Nübel and had been poised to lead the line for the campaign ahead, including European fixtures.
The decision to stand pat leaves Bredlow as the likely starter for the opening weeks of the Bundesliga season and early Champions League group stage fixtures. Stuttgart will hope Seimen’s rehabilitation progresses smoothly to allow his return before the busy autumn schedule intensifies.
