Football Kenya Federation President Hussein Mohammed has brushed aside his suspension by 12 Executive Committee members, calling the gathering illegal and the theft claims false.

Speaking at Kandanda House on Saturday, Mohammed said the decision made on 24 April holds no weight because, under the 2017 FKF constitution, only the President can convene a National Executive Committee meeting.

“I have received no formal notice of any meeting,” he stated. “Article 38 is clear: if half the members want a meeting, the President must call it within 21 days. If he fails, they may act. I was never given that chance, so yesterday’s sitting is null and void.”

The members accused him of embezzling Ksh 42 million meant for CHAN 2025 insurance. Mohammed denied any money moved through FKF accounts. “The Confederation of African Football procured and paid for the cover. We did not send a single shilling to any insurer,” he said, daring accusers to show proof.

He linked the attack to his fight against graft. “This is a smear campaign meant to soil my name and cripple the federation. I will assist any investigator, but the facts are on my side,” he added.

FKF now faces a split, with two factions claiming legitimacy while the Ministry of Sports watches closely.

In a short statement issued on Monday evening, the National Executive Committee said an internal audit showed the money left the CHAN-designated account without proper approval. The committee has asked the Directorate of Criminal Investigations and the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission to take up the matter.

Acting Chief Executive Officer Dennis Gicheru and nominated member Abdulahi Yusuf Ibrahim have also been ordered to vacate office. They will hand over all federation property and passwords by close of business Tuesday.

Deputy President MacDonald Mariga, the former Kenya international, will chair all FKF meetings and sign official documents until the probe is complete. Mariga promised transparency, saying, “We must restore trust in Kenyan football. Every coin will be accounted for.”

The suspended officials have seven days to respond to the charges in writing. The Executive Committee will then decide whether to lift the suspension or forward the file to world governing body FIFA for further sanction.

The Kenyan government has hailed the ongoing FIFA Series as a clear sign of growing trust between the country and world football’s governing body.

Speaking after meeting a high-ranking FIFA delegation in Nairobi on Tuesday, Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports, Salim Mvurya, said the tournament gives local organisers vital practice ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.

“This event shows FIFA believes in our plans,” Mvurya noted. “When the President of FIFA and the CAF boss visited last year, they promised support. This competition is that promise in action.”

The CS added that staging matches in Nairobi helps build Kenyan skills in ticketing, security, media and crowd control, all key areas for AFCON 2027.

FIFA Deputy Chief Member Associations and Regional Director for Africa, Gelson Fernandes, led the visiting team that also included FKF President Hussein Mohamed plus senior CECAFA and COSAFA officials.

Fernandes revealed that plans for a FIFA Technical Centre in Machakos remain on course. “Our president and Kenya’s head of state agreed on the land in August. We are fine-tuning designs and will break ground soon,” he said.

He also promised a new FIFA Arena in the country and pledged to review stadium projects in Mombasa so that talent hotspots along the Coast are not left out.

Mvurya welcomed the ideas, saying, “Talent lives in every county, not just the capital. Working with FIFA, we will give young players modern pitches and coaching no matter where they are born.”
