Nottingham Forest produced the perfect away performance to ease their relegation fears, crushing Sunderland 5-0 on Wearside.

Four goals before half-time stunned the home crowd. Trai Hume turned into his own net after 17 minutes, then Chris Wood punished a goalkeeping error to double the lead. Morgan Gibbs-White swept in from a corner and Igor Jesus slid home a fourth, all inside the opening 37 minutes.

Sunderland thought they had a lifeline when Dan Ballard headed in, but VAR ruled Nordi Mukiele had fouled keeper Matz Sels. Elliot Anderson added a late fifth in stoppage time to complete the rout.

The victory lifts Forest to 35 points, eight clear of the relegation places, and heaps pressure on West Ham and Tottenham below them. Sunderland remain stuck in mid-table, their push for Europe all but over.

Head coach Vitor Pereira praised his team’s aggressive pressing and deadly set-pieces. “A clean sheet and five goals shows the spirit we have built,” he said. “Every player fought for each other.”

Sunderland boss Regis Le Bris admitted his side dropped their standards. “We were punched in the face early and never recovered,” he confessed. “It is a strong reminder that any dip gets punished in this league.”
