Crystal Palace produced a stunning away performance to defeat Shakhtar Donetsk 3-1 in Poland. The Premier League side now holds a strong advantage ahead of the return leg in London.

The match started in extraordinary fashion. Ismaila Sarr found the net after only 21 seconds of play. He linked up with Jean-Philippe Mateta before firing past the goalkeeper. This strike made Sarr the joint-top scorer in the competition this season. It also broke the record for the quickest goal ever scored in the tournament.

Shakhtar improved after the interval and found an equaliser early in the second half. Oleh Ocheretko scored from close range following a corner kick. The home side controlled the ball and pushed for a second goal.

However, Palace defended with discipline and looked dangerous on the counter-attack. Daichi Kamada restored their lead with a calm finish after a double save from Shakhtar’s goalkeeper Dmytro Riznyk. Later, substitute Jorgen Strand Larsen added a third goal. He chipped the keeper following a swift break from midfield.

The statistics reveal Palace’s efficiency. They held just 29 per cent of possession but created better chances. Their expected goals (xG) total reached 2.31 compared to Shakhtar’s 1.06.

Manager Oliver Glasner praised his team’s focus. “I am very happy with the performance,” he told TNT Sports. “The players stuck to the plan and worked hard. We did not give them many chances.” He warned that the tie is not over and called for an even better display at home.

Goalscorer Strand Larsen expressed his relief after netting the third goal. “I needed that after missing chances against Liverpool,” he said. “We know the manager’s structure. We accepted we had to sit deeper, but we were effective on the counter.”

In the other semi-final, Rayo Vallecano beat Strasbourg 1-0 in Spain. Maciej Zurawski scored the only goal of that match. The final will take place in Leipzig on May 27.

Palace will travel to Bournemouth for a Premier League fixture on Sunday before hosting the second leg next Thursday.
