The fight for European places in La Liga intensified on Sunday as two contenders recorded vital wins during matchday 34 of the 2025-26 campaign.

Celta Vigo returned to winning form with a convincing display against Elche. The home side started brightly and took the lead after 14 minutes through Hugo Alvarez. Club captain Iago Aspas added a second goal on the half-hour mark to put the Galicians firmly in control.

Elche reduced the deficit late in the game when Andre Silva converted from the penalty spot in the 82nd minute. However, substitute Borja Iglesias quickly restored the two-goal advantage for Celta. The victory lifts them to 47 points and keeps them in sixth place, three points clear of Getafe who lost to Rayo Vallecano. Elche remain four points above the relegation zone.

Meanwhile, Real Betis enjoyed a comfortable afternoon at La Cartuja against struggling Real Oviedo. The Seville outfit broke the deadlock in the 22nd minute when Cucho Hernandez finished a cutback from Pablo Fornals. Just before half-time, Ez Abde doubled the lead after good work from Antony.

The result was sealed in the 58th minute when Abde provided the assist for Cucho to score his second of the match. Manuel Pellegrini will be pleased with the clean sheet, which marks a rare defensive shutout for his team in 2026. The three points move Betis nine points ahead of seventh-placed Getafe with only four matches remaining. Oviedo stay eight points from safety and face an uphill battle to avoid the drop.
