Kariobangi Sharks appear set for relegation from the FKF Premier League. They played out a 1-1 draw with defending champions Kenya Police on Wednesday evening. The result leaves them facing the drop.

The Eastlands club needed maximum points to stand any chance of survival. They also required Ulinzi Stars to suffer defeat in their match. Neither result materialised.

This crucial triumph lifted Ulinzi to 14th position on 38 points. They share this tally with Mathare United, who slipped to 15th spot. The military side escaped relegation by a narrow margin.

Sharks ended the campaign in 16th place. Ordinarily, this would confirm their demotion to the National Super League. However, legal proceedings could offer them a lifeline.

Football Kenya Federation has lodged an appeal with the High Court. They seek to reverse a ruling by the Sports Disputes Tribunal. The tribunal directed FKF to implement 2019 relegation rules. Under these regulations, only the bottom two clubs suffer automatic relegation. The team finishing third from bottom enters a promotion-relegation playoff against the NSL’s third-ranked side.

Current rules mandate that three teams drop automatically. Should the High Court uphold the SDT’s decision, Sharks would qualify for a playoff match. This would provide them with one final opportunity to preserve their top-flight status.

Veteran tactician Robert Matano stands on the verge of another career milestone. The head coach of KCB Football Club is determined to deliver the bankers their maiden trophy through this season’s FKF Cup campaign.

The 56-year-old arrived at the club from Tanzania’s Fountain Gate at the start of the current term. He has since transformed the side into genuine contenders for major honours. A solitary strike from Richard Omondi proved enough to defeat holders Nairobi United 1-0 in the quarterfinals last Sunday. This result set up a last-four clash with Matano’s former employers, Tusker FC, scheduled for the middle of May.

“Our only focus was winning and advancing,” Matano stated following the narrow victory. “Nairobi United are a very technical unit. I am pleased we managed to contain their threats. We wanted to score while keeping a clean sheet. We also needed to avenge our earlier league defeat against them.”

Matano holds the distinction of being Kenya’s most successful coach. He famously guided Sofapaka to the Premier League title during their debut top-flight season in 2009. With Tusker, he collected three league crowns and a Top Eight trophy. His cabinet also includes domestic cup victories with AFC Leopards and Nairobi City Stars.

The bankers recruited Matano after parting ways with Patrick Odhiambo at the beginning of last year. That decision now looks inspired, with the club just 180 minutes away from continental football. Triumph in the final would secure a historic place in the Confederation Cup.

Before the semifinal meeting with the brewers, KCB must concentrate on league matters. They face APS Bomet on Wednesday afternoon. Matano insists his squad will fight for positive results on both fronts.

New coach Julien Mette, who took over after a difficult spell for the 13-time champions, watched his side draw 0-0 with Sofapaka last weekend. The Frenchman rotated his squad but was unhappy with the lack of cutting edge. Tusker have netted just 24 goals in 28 matches.

“We must score more,” Mette told reporters. “One goal per game is not good enough for this club. The players are angry after last week, and I hope that anger shows on the pitch.”

Defender Francis Oduor is out injured, and midfielder Vincent Owino remains sidelined with a long-term knee problem.

At Kasarani Annex on the same afternoon, Bidco United face Posta Rangers in a relegation six-pointer. Bidco sit second-from-bottom with 22 points, six adrift of safety.
