Andrea Pirlo has publicly defended his commercial ties to Russian betting company Fonbet, acknowledging that the scandal has likely torpedoed his prospects of becoming Italy head coach. In a statement released on social media, the former Juventus midfielder insisted his collaboration with the gambling firm was purely commercial and originated from his work in the United Arab Emirates, rejecting suggestions it carried political meaning.
Pirlo’s role as global brand ambassador for Fonbet has provoked fierce opposition in Italy, where gambling advertising is illegal. The controversy intensified following reports of a visit to Moscow in May 2026 for a Fonbet event. FIGC President Giovanni Malagò is reportedly unenthusiastic about the appointment, whilst Pirlo suggested objections were being used as a “pretext” to block him. “Attributing political meaning to this collaboration means attributing convictions to me that I have never expressed,” he stated, thanking technical director Paolo Maldini and advisor Leonardo for their “respect and faith”.
Elite targets decline Azzurri approach
The betting controversy marks the latest complication in a recruitment process that has seen multiple high-profile rejections. Maldini and Leonardo held extensive discussions with Carlo Ancelotti and Pep Guardiola regarding the vacancy, but both managers declined to make themselves available. Former Bologna coach Thiago Motta was also approached and politely declined the proposal, removing another leading candidate from consideration.
Silvio Baldini, who temporarily managed both the Italy U21 and senior sides during June friendlies against Luxembourg and Greece, was effectively vetoed by Serie A clubs. Maldini accepted the newly created technical director role on the explicit condition he held decisive power over coaching appointments, but faces resistance to his preferred candidate. According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Maldini could step down if blocked from appointing Pirlo, mirroring his previous departure from AC Milan over frustrations regarding decision-making authority.
With legal threats circulating and senior figures divided, Pirlo’s statement—whilst not a formal withdrawal—conceded that “a sporting choice has been rapidly dragged into a public confrontation”. Leonardo, who has experience in backroom roles at Paris Saint-Germain, may attempt to mediate between the technical director and federation officials to prevent a complete collapse of the project. Italy now faces the prospect of further delays in appointing a permanent coach, forcing officials to either proceed with Pirlo despite the controversy or restart a search that has already exhausted several leading candidates.
