Thomas Tuchel has disclosed that he faced significant internal resistance when championing Harry Kane’s transfer to Bayern Munich during his tenure as the German club’s head coach.
Speaking after England’s 3-2 victory over Mexico in the World Cup round of 16, the current England manager revealed that securing Kane’s signature in 2023 required him to overcome scepticism within the Bayern hierarchy. “He’s a unique player and personality. I fought the fight to bring him to Bayern Munich, against other opinions,” Tuchel explained.
The comments appear to reference honorary president Uli Hoeneß, who publicly stated before the transfer that Kane “wouldn’t be a transfer for Bayern” due to concerns over the striker’s age and the associated price tag. Reports at the time suggested Hoeneß favoured Eintracht Frankfurt’s Randal Kolo Muani over the England captain, making his preference clear to Tuchel during negotiations.
Hoeneß’s opposition reportedly extended beyond private discussions, with the Bayern legend making his preference for the French forward public through German media. Those involved in the negotiations reportedly viewed these interventions as “unfortunate” and “unnecessary,” yet Tuchel persisted with his campaign to secure the Tottenham striker.
Despite the internal friction, Kane completed his move to Munich and has since vindicated Tuchel’s insistence with a remarkable scoring record. The 31-year-old has found the net 146 times in just 147 appearances for Bayern, establishing himself as one of Europe’s most prolific forwards.
Tuchel believes the move has accelerated Kane’s development both physically and mentally. “It was the right step, going into a demanding culture,” he noted. “He plays a very intense game with [Bayern coach] Vincent Kompany which helps him be in the right shape physically. The titles took a huge weight off his shoulders.”
The England boss also praised Kane’s commitment to collective objectives, observing: “It’s beautiful to see how devoted, what a team player he is.”
While Tuchel has since moved on to manage the national team, the foundation laid during the Kane transfer continues to benefit the Bavarian giants. Under Kompany’s guidance, Kane has maintained his exceptional standards within a high-intensity tactical system that his former manager believes has enhanced his physical condition.
Kane’s success has silenced any doubts about his ability to adapt to German football following his departure from North London.
