Torino have identified Aaron Ramsdale as their primary goalkeeping target as they look to solve their problems between the posts, according to reports in Italy.
The Serie A club are actively pursuing the Southampton goalkeeper, with Sport Mediaset claiming the Turin side believe a deal is achievable after the Saints dropped into the Championship. The 28-year-old England international enjoyed a temporary spell at Newcastle United last term but faces an uncertain future at St Mary’s following relegation.
Torino’s goalkeeping dilemma
The Granata moved to bolster their goalkeeping department last summer with the acquisition of Franco Israel from Sporting CP, yet the Uruguayan has struggled to adapt to Italian football. With Israel deemed unsuitable for Serie A, Torino are back in the market for a reliable presence between the sticks.
Initial enquiries for Paraguay international Orlando Gill proved fruitless. His impressive displays at the 2026 World Cup inflated his valuation beyond Torino’s financial reach, forcing the club to explore alternative options in the transfer market.
Ramsdale’s situation
Ramsdale joined Southampton on a contract running until June 2028, but the club’s demotion to the second tier has thrown his immediate future into doubt. The former Arsenal goalkeeper arrived on the south coast with substantial Premier League experience, having previously represented Sheffield United, Bournemouth and Wimbledon during his career.
Despite winning five senior caps for England, Ramsdale found himself limited to a backup role during his loan spell at Newcastle. A move to Serie A could offer the shot-stopper the prospect of regular first-team football ahead of the new campaign, whilst allowing him to remain in a top-tier division.
Proposed deal structure
Sky Sport Italia and Sport Mediaset both suggest that Torino are confident of securing Ramsdale’s services on an initial loan arrangement that includes an option to purchase. This formula would allow the Italian club to assess the goalkeeper’s adaptation to Serie A before committing to a permanent transfer.
The proposed structure would minimise Torino’s immediate financial outlay whilst providing an experienced option to compete for the starting position. Ramsdale’s remaining contract length, extending to June 2028, gives Southampton security should the Italian club exercise their purchase clause.
If the transfer materialises, Ramsdale would follow in the footsteps of Joe Hart, who spent the 2016-17 season with Torino. The Manchester City legend became a cult figure in Turin during his temporary stay, setting a precedent for English goalkeepers at the Stadio Olimpico Grande Torino.
No agreement has been finalised, and negotiations are understood to be at a preliminary stage. However, Southampton’s Championship status and the player’s apparent desire for top-flight football could facilitate discussions between the parties before the window closes.
