US Soccer has tabled a new contract for Mauricio Pochettino that would extend his stay as head coach of the men’s national team through to the 2030 World Cup. The proposal follows the squad’s historic run in the group stage of the current tournament.
World Cup run sparks renewal talks
Pochettino took charge of the United States in late 2024 on a reported $4 million base salary, a figure that increases substantially through performance bonuses. During his 22-month tenure, the 54-year-old has guided the team to their finest group stage performance in the competition’s history, securing top spot with victories over Australia and Paraguay before suffering a narrow defeat to Turkey.
The former Tottenham Hotspur and Paris Saint-Germain manager has previously indicated he would postpone any decision regarding his future until the tournament concludes. However, he recently confirmed his openness to prolonging his stay. “We told the federation we are open,” Pochettino said this week. “But we don’t want to distract when all the energy needs to be with my players.”
Club interest and federation ambition
Negotiations between Pochettino and US Soccer have reportedly been underway for approximately three months. The discussions coincide with interest from Serie A club Milan, which approached the Argentinian around late May. While Pochettino was coy when questioned about the Italian side’s interest, federation chief executive JT Batson acknowledged that he had received “many inquiries” regarding the coach’s availability.
US Soccer’s ambition extends beyond the pitch. The federation recently unveiled a $250 million training facility in Atlanta, Georgia, underlining its long-term commitment to infrastructure. Pochettino noted that creating a lasting legacy through strengthening bonds between the national side and its supporters remains a priority. “If the American people start to show passion in our sport too, why not be here being part of something that can create a legacy?” he said.
The United States face Bosnia and Herzegovina in the last-32 this week. Victory would keep them on course to match their best finish in the modern era, achieved with just two further wins. Securing Pochettino’s services for another cycle would provide continuity as the nation prepares to co-host the 2030 tournament, though any agreement will only be concluded once the current campaign ends.
