VfB Stuttgart have secured defender Dan-Axel Zagadou’s services for an additional season after the French centre-back signed a contract extension running until the summer of 2027. The defender, who has been playing for the Bundesliga club since 2022, has been handed a new deal despite ongoing struggles with fitness during his time in Germany.
Stuttgart show faith despite fitness battles
The extension marks a significant vote of confidence in Zagadou, who has battled numerous injury setbacks since his arrival three years ago. While his appearances have been limited during his time at the Mercedes-Benz Arena, the club hierarchy remains convinced of his defensive capabilities and influence within the squad.
Sporting director Fabian Wohlgemuth highlighted Zagadou’s dual value to the team when confirming the renewal. “Daxo’s footballing skills make him a valuable asset to our defence, and his personality makes him an important member of our squad. We’re looking forward to our future together,” he said.
Player pledges to repay trust
Zagadou expressed his determination to justify the club’s continued belief in his potential. He acknowledged the importance of the extended commitment from Stuttgart’s management, which replaces his previous deal that was due to conclude in 2026.
“I’m very grateful for the trust the VfB management has placed in me. I’ll do everything in my power to perform at my best for the coaching staff, the club and the fans next season. Let’s get to work and be successful together!” Zagadou stated.
The fresh terms secure Zagadou’s immediate future and provide Stuttgart with additional defensive depth as they build towards the upcoming campaign. The decision to retain the Frenchman beyond next summer offers stability to the backline, and the club will hope that an uninterrupted pre-season allows him to demonstrate the qualities that prompted their initial investment.
