Werder Bremen are negotiating with SC Freiburg over a potential loan return for winger Eren Dinkci, with a decision on the transfer expected next week.
The 24-year-old could head back to the Weserstadion just one year after leaving for Freiburg in a €5 million deal. According to German outlet Deichstube, there is a “good chance” of the move materialising, though the clubs remain at odds over the final structure of the agreement.
Loan terms remain sticking point
Freiburg are pushing for a purchase obligation to be included in any temporary arrangement, which would compel Werder to make the transfer permanent at a pre-agreed fee. Bremen, however, prefer an option to buy, allowing them to assess Dinkci’s contribution throughout the season before committing to a full transfer.
The divergent positions reflect the financial and sporting considerations at play. Freiburg seek certainty over the player’s future and a route to recoup part of their initial €5 million outlay from 2024, while Werder are wary of assuming another significant wage burden without guarantees of first-team output.
Heidenheim spell fails to ignite career
Dinkci has struggled to find his rhythm since swapping northern Germany for the Breisgau. After making the switch last summer, he featured sparingly during the first half of the campaign before spending the second half on loan at fellow Bundesliga side 1. FC Heidenheim. That temporary spell failed to ignite his career momentum, leaving him on the periphery of Freiburg’s plans heading into the new season.
A return to Bremen would provide the German youth international with attacking reinforcement for their Bundesliga campaign and potentially offer a route back to form in familiar surroundings. For Freiburg, resolving Dinkci’s situation would free up squad space and wages ahead of their own pre-season preparations.
Both clubs hope to reach a conclusion within days, determining whether the winger will wear Werder green again this term.
