Concrete supports at Werder Bremen‘s Weserstadion have fractured, causing a partial collapse of a stand during ongoing modernisation works. The incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon in the upper tier of Block 53, which sits adjacent to the stadium’s Ostkurve, or East Stand.

The structural failure was triggered when a load-bearing column was accidentally struck during renovation work in a VIP section. According to a statement from Bremer Weserstadion GmbH, workers were removing window panes in the area when the supporting column was compromised. Hans-Jörg Otto, managing director of the stadium company, explained: “A load-bearing column was accidentally damaged during renovation work in a section of the VIP area where window panes were being removed.”

The damage resulted in a partial collapse of the stand in Block 53’s upper tier. Regional news programme Buten un Binnen first reported the fracture, with Sky Germany subsequently confirming the details. Fortunately, the club confirmed that no one was injured in the incident.

Safety Assessment

The club has confirmed that the remaining sections of the stadium remain secure. Otto emphasized that the damage is isolated to Block 53. “There is no risk of collapse for the other sections of the stands,” he stated. Officials are now conducting a comprehensive analysis of the structural damage to determine the precise repairs required.

Restoration Timeline

Werder Bremen is working to minimise disruption to the venue. “We are currently analyzing the situation and the damage incurred, and we hope to be able to restore the stand as quickly as possible,” Otto added. The broader modernisation project continues in other areas of the stadium while assessments proceed in the affected VIP section. The club has not indicated whether upcoming fixtures will be affected, pending the completion of structural evaluations.
