Youssouf Fofana has opened up about his departure from AC Milan, stating he felt his exit could have been handled differently, despite holding “no hard feelings” towards the Italian club. The midfielder joined Sevilla on loan on the final day of the summer transfer window.

Fofana, who arrived at Milan in the summer of 2024, quickly established himself, making 68 league appearances across his first two seasons for the Rossoneri. However, a significant shift occurred with the arrival of Ruben Amorim as head coach over the summer. Amorim’s appointment led to a re-evaluation of the squad, with Fofana among several players deemed surplus to requirements for the 2026-27 season. Other notable players initially considered for departure included Christohpher Nkunku, David Odogu, and Fikayo Tomori.

Despite plenty of interest in Fofana’s services from various clubs, Milan ultimately opted to loan the Frenchman to Sevilla. The deal, finalised on the very last day of the summer transfer window, is for the 2026-27 season and notably does not include an option for Sevilla to make the move permanent. Reports indicate that the Spanish side is contributing only 8% of Fofana’s salary during his loan spell, highlighting the financial terms of the temporary switch.

Fofana’s Perspective on Milan Exit

Reflecting on the rapid turn of events, Fofana told Spanish outlet El Pais that “it all happened very quickly” and he “didn’t have time to think.” He emphasised Sevilla’s strong desire to sign him, explaining his decision to move: “I didn’t want to keep waiting at Milan because I knew I wasn’t going to play.” He added, “I go where people want me and have trust in me.”

While Fofana stated he had “no hard feelings” towards Milan, he expressed that he felt there were “other ways to handle the situation.” He concluded that both he and Milan are now content with the outcome, with him at Sevilla and Milan having the squad they desired.
