Turkey international Zeki Celik has committed his future to Roma by agreeing a new contract, rejecting concrete approaches from Serie A rivals Fiorentina and Turkish giants Fenerbahce. The 29-year-old defender is set to earn approximately €3 million per season under the renewed terms, representing a significant pay reduction from his previous deal as the Giallorossi adjust their financial structure.
Celik became a free agent on June 30 when his existing contract expired, making him available to sign for any club without a transfer fee. This status prompted late attempts from both Fiorentina and Fenerbahce to secure his services during the summer window. Both clubs hoped to capitalise on his contractual situation to strengthen their defensive options. However, the versatile full-back has opted to extend his stay at the Stadio Olimpico despite the financial sacrifice required to fit within the club’s new wage parameters.
The defender originally joined Roma from French side Lille in the summer of 2022 for €7.4 million. Since arriving in the Italian capital, he has established himself as a reliable presence in the squad, accumulating 151 competitive appearances across all competitions. His contributions include two goals and ten assists during his two-year tenure with the club.
The renewal aligns with Roma’s revised financial strategy following their qualification for the Champions League. The club has been working to reduce its wage bill while maintaining squad depth for domestic and European campaigns. Celik follows teammate Paulo Dybala in accepting reduced terms to remain part of the project. The agreement ensures continuity in defence as the club prepares to compete in Europe’s premier club competition next season, securing a player with proven experience in the Italian top flight.
