1. FC Köln have secured the signature of Australian international Paul Okon-Engstler from Sydney FC for a fee of €1 million, the Bundesliga club announced. The 21-year-old defensive midfielder has signed a long-term contract keeping him at the RheinEnergieStadion until 2030.
The Belgium-born midfielder arrives as Köln’s second World Cup signing of the window, following the earlier arrival of Ghanaian international Gideon Mensah. Okon-Engstler featured in all four of Australia’s matches at the 2026 World Cup, registering an assist for their opening goal of the tournament.
Managing director Thomas Kessler welcomed the newcomer, highlighting his rapid development. “We are really pleased that Paul has decided on a move to 1. FC Köln. He is a young player with a lot of potential, and someone who has developed really well in the past few years,” Kessler said. “With his impressive performances for Sydney FC, he earned a place in the Australian national team and was able to showcase the development path he has been on at the World Cup.”
Okon-Engstler, who has earned ten caps for the Socceroos, expressed his enthusiasm for the move. “FC Köln is a club with a huge history, with incredible fans and stadium. I can’t wait to play there and finally get on the pitch with the team. For me, it’s exactly the right step in my career,” he said.
The transfer experienced a minor delay when the player suffered from flu, but he has now completed his medical examination. He is scheduled to link up with Köln’s squad at their pre-season training camp in Kitzbühel, Austria, on Friday.

Okon-Engstler’s move to Germany represents a return to European football, having left Australia aged 14 to join Club Brugge’s academy. He later spent time with Benfica’s youth setup before returning to his homeland to join Sydney FC in 2025.
Football runs deep in the family. His father, Paul Okon, enjoyed a distinguished playing career in the Premier League and Serie A, and served as assistant coach of the Australian national team during the recent World Cup campaign.
Squad Context and Uncertainty
The Australian is expected to provide cover in defensive midfield, though his exact role depends on further incoming and outgoing transfer activity. Köln received a boost with the return of Tunisian international Ellyes Skhiri, who was released by Eintracht Frankfurt to negotiate a potential return to the club.
However, speculation linking Mexico international Edson Álvarez with a move to Köln remains unconfirmed, with no recent updates on that potential deal. Reports suggesting that Okon-Engstler’s World Cup teammate Nestory Irankunda is expected to join Sporting CP from Watford also remain unverified.
