Key Takeaways

  • Richard Basangwa is stable after a late elbow to the throat left him gasping on the turf.
  • A hospital scan found no internal damage; the Ugandan forward can now speak softly.
  • Red-carded Glory Kisule and match officials face fresh questions over pitch-side medical cover.

NEC FC say striker Richard Basangwa is “out of danger” after a last-minute clash left him struggling for air during Tuesday’s Uganda Premier League goalless draw with Express FC at Nakivubo Stadium.

The 90th-minute flash-point came when defender Glory Kisule’s elbow caught the forward in the neck. Basangwa collapsed, lost his voice and briefly blacked out, forcing referee Joshua Duula to halt play and send Kisule off.

Club doctors carried out emergency care on the pitch, but the stadium ambulance had a flat tyre and lacked basic kit. Staff commandeered a Toyota Land Cruiser to race the player to Case Clinic where a CT scan cleared him of serious harm.

“Paracetamol infusion was given and the scan was negative,” NEC said on Wednesday. “He speaks in a low, clear tone and breathes easier. An ENT review will decide if he can go home today.”

Uganda Premier League officers are yet to comment on the ambulance failure, an issue that has long worried domestic clubs.
