Key Takeaways

  • Rodri and Bernardo Silva dropped into defence to beat Arsenal’s press and set the tempo for a 2-1 City win.
  • Jamie Carragher says the pair showed “real courage” while Arsenal’s midfield refused the ball in critical moments.
  • The victory cuts Arsenal’s lead to three points and City still have a match in hand.

Manchester City clawed the Premier League title race back to life after a 2-1 home victory over leaders Arsenal on Sunday moved Pep Guardiola’s side within three points of the summit with a game to spare.

Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher believes the match was decided in the centre of the park, where City’s seasoned duo Rodri and Bernardo Silva out-thought and out-worked Declan Rice and Martin Ødegaard.

“Rodri and Bernardo produced one of the best two-man midfield shows I’ve seen in this league,” Carragher said on Monday Night Football. “They won the game there.”

Arsenal began aggressively, pinching the ball six times in the final third inside the opening quarter of an hour – the highest tally for any team this campaign. Yet once Rodri and Silva retreated to collect the ball from goalkeeper Stefan Ortega and the centre-backs, the visitors’ press collapsed.

“Bernardo and Rodri basically became extra defenders,” Carragher explained. “They kept asking for the ball even after Silva lost it once to Rice. That bravery allowed City to play through Arsenal’s trap.”

In contrast, Arsenal often punted long from goal-kicks. Carragher noted that William Saliba dropped deeper than in the recent Carabao Cup meeting, while the midfield stayed higher to bypass City’s front four. Even so, when the ball did reach Ødegaard, Kai Havertz or Rice, they were reluctant to carry it out.

“At 7 v 4, including your keeper, you have to show for the ball,” Carragher added. “City’s players demanded it; Arsenal’s didn’t. That was the difference.”

The pundit also singled out Martin Zubimendi, who was recruited from Real Sociedad to add composure. The Spaniard was part of a five-man wall that momentarily surrounded Phil Foden before the midfielder curled in the opener, yet he failed to react when the ball came back across seconds later.

“Zubimendi shadows Foden, then can’t get set in time,” Carragher said. “One less body, one yard of space – that’s all top players need.”

For City’s second, Zubimendi played a loose forward pass that ran straight to Ortega. The keeper launched a rapid move which ended with Nico O’Reilly racing clear on the right, where Zubimendi had vacated.

“You buy Zubimendi to be calm in tough arenas,” Carragher concluded. “Going to the Etihad in a title fight is exactly that. He has to do better.”

City’s triumph not only tightened the table but also underlined the value of midfield nerve under fierce pressure – something Guardiola’s veterans have in abundance and Arteta’s men are still learning to master.
