Atletico Madrid captain Koke Resurreccion has shared his emotional state ahead of the club’s crucial Champions League semi-final first leg against Arsenal. The 34-year-old midfielder likened the pre-match tension to the feeling of meeting someone special for the first time.

“It is like when you have your first date with a girl you really like,” the Spanish international explained. “You feel butterflies in your stomach as the day gets closer. But once you step onto the pitch for the warm-up, those nerves disappear. You simply feel excited to play in such a big match.”

This marks Koke’s return to the semi-final stage of Europe’s top club competition after a nine-year absence. He remains the only current Atletico player who featured in both the 2014 and 2016 final defeats. The skipper stressed the importance of maintaining composure whilst showing passion against the English side.

“We saw against Barcelona in the quarter-finals and in the Round of 16 that these ties are decided by small details,” he stated. “The standard is extremely high. We must be intense and aggressive, but we also need clear heads. The winner will be the team that focuses on the fine points.”

The fixture holds extra significance as it represents Antoine Griezmann’s last home appearance for the club in this competition. Koke hopes the team can give the French forward a memorable farewell.

“We want to win this trophy for him,” Koke said. “Saying goodbye with the Champions League title would be incredible. We are all motivated by this goal. We are a team, and we fight together for the ultimate prize.”

Koke has played more minutes than expected this season after injuries sidelined midfielders Johnny Cardoso and Pablo Barrios. He recently completed 120 minutes against Real Sociedad in the Copa del Rey final. However, he insists he feels fresh and ready for the challenge.

“I am not surprised by my fitness levels,” he added. “I wake up every day motivated to play for this shirt. That drive keeps me performing at my best.”

The first leg kicks off at 21:00 CEST on Wednesday evening at the Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid. The return fixture takes place next Tuesday at Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium in North London.
